Types of travel to Romania, a Country of Contrasts

It takes a while after you travel through Romania to put together all the contrasting images you get and make the complete picture of the country. Go to Bucharest to see what the communism did from a city once considered “The Little Paris”.

Go to Transylvania and see the clean streets, laid back people and its cozy atmosphere, or to Maramures in the north for a glimpse of the bucolic Romanian lifestyle and architecture, and then check the glittering-kitschy resort areas from the sea-side.

Rent a car to drive on the country’s roads and smile at the ironical luxurious Audi or BMW’s furiously overtaking horse-drawn vehicles. If you think Romania can’t offer you some quite spectacular images, you can’t be more wrong. Here are some iconic places in Romania that you can go, depending on what type of a vacation you prefer:

Bucharest – although not a friendly city for living there, Bucharest has its charm for the travelers. The busy, hectic lifestyle is visible everywhere, from traffic jams to people flocking to catch the bus or the tram in the morning.

The Danube Delta is home to over 320 species of birds. Some are strictly protected and cannot be seen elsewhere except the Danube Delta.

Transylvania – Bounded on the east and south by the Carpathian Mountains, Transylvania, or Ardeal in Romanian, is a completely different region than other Romanian places. For many centuries it belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and there is still an ongoing scholarly debate over the ethnicity of Transylvania’s population.

Best places to see in Transylvania are the cities of Brasov, Sibiu and Sighisoara, the last being also the place where Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) – the ruler that inspired the creation of the Dracula character – was born.

If you go more to the west, don’t miss Timisoara, one of the country’s most developed and multicultural cities, comprising strong Hungarian, German and Serbian minorities.

Maramures – a region that has remained unchanged in decades, Maramures is probably the last place in Europe where you can go back 100 years and feel the true lifestyle of villages.

Advantage of Family Vacations

Moscow by Winter…Don’t Let the Bad Weather Disappoint You

Ok, so the Russian winter is not too friendly. It snows constantly, the gray colorless skies might make you feel you got to the land of depressed people and the temperatures drop to -8 degrees Celsius. But traveling in Moscow during winter is indeed a true unique experience and there are all the time things to do and see.

Russians enjoy the winter and try to make it as fun and festive as possible, and you will still be able to enjoy this city of superlatives. The Third Rome, Whitestone, The First Throne or The Forty Forties, you can name it however you like, the city will still remain astonishing.

The Russian capital city is practically bursting out with energy – former factories and warehouses transformed into art galleries or underground clubs. You will find Moscow’s nightlife completely alive, having a wide range of options, from expensive nightclubs to underground bars and laid-back cafes.

But it’s winter and you are in one of the most representative places for this season, right? So then go ice-skating – you’ll find ice rinks in almost all Moscow’s parks – and enjoy the snowman parades. Also, don’t forget the country is famous for ice sculpting. You can see ice sculptures at various venues and they also make part of the winter festival in Moscow.

Go on a walk during the evening and take some pictures or just watch the New Year’s Trees. As Russian Orthodox Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January, Russians light up their trees celebrating the New Year to come and most of them disappear till Christmas.

You will find the trees in the main Moscow’s squares, the Red Square or Kremlin’s Cathedral Square. The Russian capital enjoys a high number of celebrations and festivities and most sure a festival will take place while you are visiting during winter.

The Russian Winter Festival in Moscow takes place in the last week of December and the first week of January and you will find it in Izmailovo Park, where you can enjoy troika rides and listen to live folk music.

December Nights Festival takes place in the second half of December and first half of January, when many classical music performances are held in different places. On New Year’s Eve go to the Red Square where all the people gather and for Christmas, on January 7th you can attend the mass held at Kremlin.

The Channel Islands, a Different Type of Islands Vacation

If you are thinking that islands vacations means only Caribbean or tropical places, you can’t be more wrong. Britain actually has some nice places where you can enjoy a holiday and the many islands around England, Wales and Scotland are for sure worth visiting.

The Channel Islands are Britain’s most southerly group of islands and consist of Jersey and Guernsey bailiwicks. Neither of them are part of the United Kingdom and they are two separate self-governing bailiwicks. Both the Bailiwick of Guernsey and the Bailiwick of Jersey are British Crown Dependencies.

St Peter Port is Guernsey’s capital and is well known for being a lively harbor town. A must visit is the famous French poet Victor Hugo’s house and gardens. Known for its seafood, its beautiful beaches, cliffs and its yacht harbors, Guernsey, at 24 square miles, is the second largest of the British Channel Islands.

Jersey is the biggest Channel Island, situated just 14 miles from France. The island is a popular holiday destination for its mild climate, long beaches and rugged cliffs, good for walking and cycling.

Guernsey contains also other small islands and two separate jurisdictions. If you go on Alderney Island, you’ll find an unspoiled place only three and half miles wide, but with its own government, airport and port. During the German occupation in World War II, the island was evacuated and Germans used it to transport thousands of workers of many nations to build military fortifications. The workers were treated with great cruelty and brutality and the number of the ones who perished either on the island’s concentration camps or on the mainland after they left Alderney is not known. The fortifications, sobering on all the islands, have a particular resonance here.

Sark is the smallest of the four main Channel Islands. It has a population of just 550 and is a traffic free place. The only engines here are attached to tractors and this is how the ambulance service is also functioning. It was the last feudal state of Europe until 2006 when legislators voted to allow all of Sark’s residents to vote. The island is unique and you will be struck by that when you will see that road signs measure distances in minutes to walk, and not miles.

Herm is a small islet you can reach only in 20 minutes by a boat trip from Guernsey. White beaches and car free, the island doesn’t allow not even bicycles. The island is operated, under lease, by the same family since 1949.

The Exquisite Lakes of North Italy

The lakes of North Italy have few equals anywhere in the world. It is famous for its Mediterranean climate, its blue waters, its attractive villas and gardens, the variety of the colorful landscape. The lake is surrounded by small towns and is a favorite tourist destination for the sport activities it offers.
